LoliRock Behind the Scenes - Transformations Sequences

Hi, here’s a new Behind the scenes that I think you should appreciate : it’s about our princesses transformations sequences.

Iris’, Talia’s and Auriana’s transformations were storyboarded by Christelle Abgrall (storyboard supervisor on LoliRock), and Amaru’s transformation was storyboarded by Jean-Louis Vandestoc (aka “the director”).

These were created at the very beginning of the production, even before the storyboard of episode 102. Christelle is a huge fan of Sailor Moon, as much as Jean-Louis is with Pinky Momo. That’s why he wanted her to carry this mission. As Christelle said on her website :

“ When LoliRock’s director, Jean-Louis Vandestoc, asked me to create the transformation sequences, I was completely stunned, in a good way. I never thought that I would be asked, as a professional, to draw the exact same thing I had fun drawing on my school’s notebooks. Creating these transformations was “total awesomeness” and “completely stressful” at the same time. I wanted to do the best I could, and not to miss this opportunity, as I would very unlikely be able to do that again in the future. ”

And as you can see, these transformation sequences are more than just an average storyboard : most of the animation is already there.

As you may or may not know, these transformations were originally intented to be created as CGI sequences, and to that end we worked with the french animation studio Nintai (You can find their work on LoliRock on their youtube channel).

However, at some point we felt these CGI transformations were too far from the 2D “look & feel” of the show. We wondered if we should keep it as it was, or redo it in 2D to match the show better. It was a painful decision to make, and an expensive one too since it meant extra-cost to our not-so-exstensive budget… and at this time we weren’t even sure the 2D transformations would be better ! It’s one big dilemma we had to solve, both the director (Jean-Louis) and his production manager (myself).

In the end, as you already know, we decided to switch and have the transformation re-animated in 2D, by the same animators that were doing the rest of the show : Inspidea’s team, in Malaysia. The work done by Nintai in CGI was used as reference to help the 2D animators, and most of the compositing done by Nintai was kept in the end. Was it worth it ? You tell us. ;)

Amaru’s transformation was done in a straight line compared to the girl’s. In fact, he wasn’t even supposed to have one “official” transformation at the beginning, but Jean-Louis felt “it would be better if he had one”, so here we are!

(Edit : A few audio & video glitches have been (more or less) fixed, therefore the video needed to be uploaded again to be updated)

Inspidea’s crew LoliRock Fanart (Round 2)

Another batch of fanarts we received from our malaysian team. Truth is, they sent us tons of fanart at the beginning of the animation stage, back in 2013, so what you see here is only the tip of the iceberg.

For every drawing you got from your team, you get a little happier each time, because you know that despite the distance, these artists will put as much heart into your show as yourself. :)

All drawings above are credit with the name or pseudo of the artists who did them, with their job within the production.

Inspidea’s crew LoliRock Fanart (Round 1)

As we just finished the production of season 1, we’d like to share some fanarts from the “lolirock malaysian team” at Inspidea, our animation studio in Asia. WIthout them, LoliRock wouldn’t exist. So thanks a lot everyone ! Thanks for your work, and enduring the hardship of this production.

All drawings above are credit with the name or pseudo of the artists who did them (except for one we can’t find out…), with their job within the production.

Second round of Inspidea’s fanart coming on wednesnday ! ;)

Iris’ First Fight scene (LoliRock Behind the Scenes - S01E01)

Here’s a new behind the scene, with Iris’ first transformation and first fight against the twins.

I remember it was a really important scene for us. When Iris sees herself for the first time in her magical dress, we all wanted her to be cute, and as react as natural as possible … or should I say, as WE would react in her position. :)

A little technical point : some shots have a purple filter on them, while most other are just plain white. Here’s the explanation : when it’s purple, it’s considered as a “Reuse”, meaning it has already been created in another episode (or at least before this one) and doesn’t not need to be animated again by the studio.

So, with no surprise, you’ll see this purple filter on the girls’s transformations scenes and on the Crystal-Luxtra spell… save for a few extra shots, specials for this episode : Instead of having the three girls cast perfectly their spell, as in the following episodes, here you’ll see Iris hesitating, observing Talia and Auriana, and having a little delay compared to them. This is subtil, we agree, but it was to show that it’s the first spell that Iris is casting, and she’s still lacking confidence in it. :)

Finally, when Iris is hesitating, hiding behind the car, you’ll see that we improved a lot this sequence in the final render compared to the animatic. Indeed, it’s rare we implement these kind of “flashback / inner thought” right at the animatic, except if it was very detailed in the script. Most of the time, we improve this right at the edit, when we have more material to do so. It’s also a way to force ourselves to be smart with the shots we reuse, and avoid creating too much new animation for a very short scene.

Oh, and yes, the storyboard artist used some Sailor Moon’s sfx in his animatic. :) And we’re fine with it.

Magical Cave scene (LoliRock Behind the Scenes - S01E01)

Here is the famous (at least for the team) “Magical Cave” scene from the first episodes.

The storyboard artist put a lot of ambiances and colors when staging this sequence. It is always useful to give these information, especially for the color background and compositing teams…

However, when you compare it to the final render, all the blue ambiance was replaced by an orange-sepia tone. Why is that ? Well, even though we liked the blue, we needed to change it because of Auriana : since she’s the one showing the event, and since her magic color is orange, we felt we had to change in order to be consistant with the style of the serie.

A few minor lines were also removed at the final edit stage, in order to improve the scene. Exposition sequences, as this one, always have the risk to be too explanatory and artificial. To work properly, it has to feel as a natural and genuine discussion as much as possible.
