Mephisto & Praxina Disguised, and the Black Crystal Toy-Fusion Monster (From S01E11 “Step Right Up”)

Here are the designs of Mephisto and Praxina’s first disguise in the show. It was something we were very careful of all along the production : we knew a lot of people would compare them to the Team Rocket (which is fair, since they were one of the inspiration for the twins), but we wanted to differentiate ourselves from Jesse & James as much as possible, so we didn’t rely much on the disguise.

It happens, and is usually a good time for comedy (and a huge facepalm toward the princesses as “how can’t you NOT see it’s them disguised ?!”) but it not the main scheme of the twins.

Oh, and by the way, 2 disguises + 3 orphans (with two outfits) + 1 new adult + 1 monster + 10 evil plushies + 10 evil “yet looking normal” plushies = TOO MANY DESIGNS FOR ONE FRAKING EPISODE.

If you’re one day a writer and want to be loved by the production team, make sure they’ll be given the time to draw all the characters before putting them in the script. ;) Or be prepared to face their anger… This episode was undoubtedly one of the heaviest episodes for the chara-design team in season 1.

Rose, Belina and Olivia Model Sheets (From S01E11 “Step Right Up”)

Here are the designs of our three favourite orphans : Rose (a.k.a “Lil Iris”), Belina (a.k.a “Lil Talia”) and Olivia (a.k.a “Lil Auriana”). It was kind of fun creating these three characters, and making the three of them different from their “favourite LoliRock”.

Ah, and as a bonus, the model sheet of Talia without her jacket and shoes, as it was asked a few times. :)

This episode was the first one to be storyboarded by Anaïs “Noon” Chevillard, who’ll also storyboard episodes 15 “Stitches”, 24 “Smart”, and in second season episode 24 “Forget You” and music video 10 “Never Give Up”.

Twins Swords & Black Crystal Dinosaur (From S01E09 “A Promise is a Promise”)

Here are a few posings on the baddies side, from episode S01E09 “A promise is a Promise”.

Oh, and I got a few questions as to “why is the dinosaur wearing Praxina’s leggins ? Well, I have no idea, and neither have any of the designers. :) They didn’t realize it could be seen this way when they created this monster. It’s a just funny coincidence.

I love to have Praxina and Mephisto being able to swordfight. :) (And as some of you already noted, here’s another common point for Iris and Praxina : they’re both ambidextrous)

Magical Posings (From S01E09 “A Promise is a Promise”)

Hey, turns out there are a lot of very cool posings in this episode !

Fun fact : Initialy, none of the character was supposed to have a “weapon”. They were supposed to have only “wands” and cast spells with them, and have “long range / wizard battles”, like the one in the first episodes. That’s when our storyboard artist team came in the loop, and though it would be cooler. And it was ! But also harder to animate and thus a little more expensive to create, so as usual, that’s why we had to refrain from doing it too much. Once in a while is good though, don’t you think ? ;)

As for Auriana, well, yeah no sword for her. She already had her ribbon/whip wand, and we didn’t feel she’d need more or that it would work with her personality.

This episode was fun to create, but honestly to us it was mostly a filler. So we were surprised (and pleased) to see that most of you love Matt and Stanley (Jerome in french) as characters.

As a fun fact, Jean-Louis hates Stanley as a character. :) So he wasn’t really happy when we had to bring him back in season 2 because we needed a security guard (“Musical Magical Tour”) or because we were back to the museum (”Amaru Universe” and “The Ruby of the Orient”). On my side, I think it’s was a good thing : it helped give the feeling that Sunny Bay was an actual city with its denizen.

At the storyboard-animatic stage, Charles Lefebvre created initially an impressive sword fight scene, but unfortunately we couldn’t keep it all. We were able to keep the sword though, and to reuse them from time to time. ;)
