LoliRock Main Characters Line Up

I’ve received a few messages pointing that the size of characters seems to change on the model sheets I post on this blog, especially Talia compared to Iris and Auriana. 

Well, yeah, they do because most of what I post are quick montage of separate sheets, and I admit I don’t really pay attention to this (up to a point of course).

On the production however, relation sizes was something we paid a really close attention, and all characters / monsters created on the show had a size comparison with Iris, since we used her as the reference height. So here are the two main line up, that were created during development stage. These are the correct relation-sizes. 

That’s when we decided we wanted Auriana a little smaller and Talia a little higher than Iris, that Praxina should be around Talia’s height, that most boys are one head higher than girls, that Gramorr is insanely tall, etc.

Fun fact : on their magical outfits, both Talia and Auriana are taller since they now have high-heel. But Iris already had heels on her casual outfits, and we didn’t want the relative size of Iris-Talia-Auriana to change when they are in magical mode. So we cheated : we made Iris a little taller in magical outfit to preserve the relation size we liked in casual form. “It’s magic”. You’re welcome. ;)

Edit : I added another model sheet with Lyna, Carissa, Izira and Lev. Basically, Lyna is a little small than Talia but taller than Iris, and Carissa is the same size as Iris. The “trick” with Iris’ height is applied also with Lyna and Carissa, so the relative relation size between them stays the same, being casual outfit or magical outfits.

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #11 - REHEARSAL STUDIO

Last room “in” the house : it’s the musical rehearsal studio that’s in the basement of the house. (as it’s in the basement, there is no natural night in this room, so we only had to create two ambiances : “Light On” and “Light Off”)

In early versions, this room was a lot more messy, with more instruments, old items from Aunt Ellen, and non-musical related items, as we wanted to give the feeling that LoliRock began as any other “garage band”. 

However, as we see this room a lot, and as it has “a secret”, we had to make the room cleaner and more professional in the end, also to make the background easier to draw.

And as for the secret : this is from this room that the princesses can access their Magical Library and Training Room… which you’ll see more in the next post. ;)

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #10 - Aunt Ellen’s House - DOWNSTAIRS Corridors & Map

Second part of the house, with the first floor corridors (Day and Night-with-Lights-On ambiance) and the map. I guess you have all the house now.

Wait… What about the basement ? ;) Still a few rooms left to uncover.

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #09 - Aunt Ellen’s House - UPSTAIRS Corridors & Girls’ Bathroom & Map

To complete the main pack. Once we had the rooms, obviously we needed the other lesser parts of the house : corridors, bathroom, and stuff like that. 

All the interior was thought to match more with the outside of the house, while trying to stay modern and bright (which is kinda hard when the house looks too old on the outside.)

Here are the upstairs corridors, in “Day” and “Evening + Light on” ambiances, and also the girl’s bathroom that we see in a few episodes). Aunt Ellen has a separate bathroom near her own room, on the first floor. ;)

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #08 - Aunt Ellen’s House - Living Room

To complete the house, now that we have most rooms, we needed to create places such as the living room, kitchen, dining room, etc. 

In order to make things simpler, we chose to merge the three into one big wide living room. As for most of the house, it had to be a room full of light. It’s also a central place that leads to the backyard, to Aunt Ellen’s winter garden, and to the rest of the first floor.

Above are the two main ambiances for this background : “Day”, and “Evening / Light on”.

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #07 - AUNT ELLEN’s ROOM and WINTER GARDEN

As we designed each girl’s room, we created one for Aunt Ellen too. As you can see, this room is more classic than the three other ones. Truth is, we knew we wouldn’t use it a lot in the show, so it’s not the room we spent the most of time on. 

We also knew that we needed Aunt Ellen “occupied” most of the time, and far enough so the girls can do whatever they need to in the house without risking meeting her everytime. That’s why we created her winter garden, which she can access from the living room. Now that’s the place where Aunt Ellen spend most of her time. We wanted it to be very bright and full of plants of all sorts.

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #06 - TALIA and AURIANA’s ROOMS

As Aunt Ellen’s house was supposed to be a “big and old house”, Talia and Auriana’s room were initially thought to be “rearranged” room, that were not bedroom initially. 

Talia settled on Aunt Ellen’s main library, while Auriana chose to settle in the attic room. 

However, due to changes and evolution, in the end Auriana’s room is pretty much like Iris’ one, except more orange and with different stuff to show her tastes : a lot of plushies, and several music instruments from around the world. 

Talia stayed in the library, but we made the room cleaner and more blue than what was initially drawn. See the ceiling however ? Every room in the house had this kind of wood pattern at the beginning. Our producers felt if would make the house too old, so we removed it nearly everywhere. It also made the background slightly easier to create. ;)

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #05 - IRIS’ ROOM

Here’s Iris’ room, in three ambiances : Day, Night (Light On) and Night (Light Off).

As you can guess, the pink girl get a pink room, full of cuteness. :) 

It was the first room we created, and it served as a reference to the other ones in the house.

We also tested more ambiances on Iris’ room compared to other rooms, because it’s probably this one we see the most in the show (all the moments where Iris write in her diary mostly)

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #04 - AUNT ELLEN’S HOUSE (EXT)

To be able to shelter three girls, Aunt Ellen needed a big house. So we gave her the kind of beautiful house we’d like to have ourselves. ;) Yeah, with the dock and boat house too. 

It had to fit in Sunny Bay’s architecture style, and at the same time be a little older and cosy, which is why we made a wood house. 

And since the girls sometimes uses magic in the house, it had to be big enough for them and aunt Ellen to be in separate rooms and avoid awkwards moments. ;) Secrets are hard to keep.

BACKGROUNDS MAIN PACK #03 - SMOOTHIE BAR (INT)

The smoothie bar is kind of the girl’s second home, and their favourite place to “chill out”. It’s a place we see a lot in the show (probably even more than their house, at least in season 1). We wanted this place to be warm, welcoming, and always bright too. 

Above is “day” color ambiance, while bellow is “night / light on” color ambiance.

8/ BONUS : VILLAINS GROUP POSING

Here’s a few bonus. ;) Group posing for the twins, and Gramorr & Banes. 

The color ones have leaked a long time ago, but well, at least you now know where they came from. ;)

6B/ …and PRAXINA

Still from the main pack, here’s Praxina. “Big” sister of Mephisto. Even though they’re twins, that’s how she sees herselve anyway. Evil, relentless, she’s devoted to Gramorr and hates the princesses from the bottom of her heart. Her anger is both her strenght and her weakness as it ofter blinds her. 

She hates losing and don’t hesitate to put the blame on Mephisto everytime she can. Yet, deep inside her, she may not be as heartless as she seems to be, and truly cares for her brother, despites his many failures.

Doug, Aunt Ellen and Missy’s expressions

Even though they didn’t make it to the main pack (because they’re mostly rough), I thought you’d like to see posings and expressions for Aunt Ellen, Doug and Missy. (from our old “Presentation pack”, we used to introduce the show to new people)

These are the researches that we liked the most, and were used as reference to finalise these characters. That’s why they’re more rough than previous designs from the main pack, and it’s kind of normal : cleaning a drawing takes time, and we don’t do it all the times, even less so for secondary characters.

5/ Iris’ entourage

Nathaniel is Iris’ hidden lover. He works as a waiter at a Smoothie Bar where the 3 girls like to chill. Doug is Nathaniel’s best friend and a videoblog-nerd lolirock fan. Missy is in love with Nathaniel too and therfore arises as Iris’ rival.
Aunt Ellen is Iris’ only parental figure since she doesn’t know her real parents until…

New sheets from the main pack about the entourage : Nathaniel, Aunt Ellen, Doug, and Missy (Suzy in french). 

Again, as you can see we draw a new “hands sheet” for the boys in the show. :)
