More Lolirock Color Research!
Mephisto and Praxina, Gramorr and Banes, Nathaniel and Doug, Missy, Amaru. Designed by Bertrand Todesco and Benedicte Ciaravino.

The last one are Black Ice Monsters. We thought of them for some puppet/guards of the bad guys but then we cancelled them… Designed by Julien Rossire

all color research by me :-)

And again, here are a lot of the color researches that were made during the developpement. It feels so much like going back in time… You can see early design of nearly every character : the twins, Iris, Nathaniel, Doug, Missy, Amaru’s first form, even the “B.I.M” (aka “Black Ice Monsters”), that were supposed to be Mephisto and Praxina’s cheap minions at the start of the show…

I don’t you for you, but Gramorr in white was one of my favourite tests. ;) (and with a black mask too, like on episode 1′s flashback poster paints)

And again, only the tip of the iceberg… Thank you so much for your work guys ! And especially you, Flore, for all these great colors !

LOLIROCK CHARACTERS
6A/ MEPHISTO…

Let’s continue to reveal the main pack of the show ! Here’s Mephisto’s turn. “Little” brother of Praxina, he’s both at the same time the comic relief, the joker, and a tenacious opponent for the princesses. Most of the time following his sister’s orders, yet he can shine too and have genius ideas, though he doesn’t always realise it. Definitely evil, Definitely awesome. It’s not surprising he’s the favourite character of many people among the team !

Design by Bertrand Todesco, Gaëlle Autin and Bénédicte Ciarravino. Color by Flore Pipari.

aliscenkhaw:

I finally have time to continue my praxina back story!! XD animation produciton lately has been nuts, so I could only work on some sketches, but sadly I had to abandon my original story line (top4 sketches) because many of my friends said it was too tragic for praxina.

The original one was to have praxina’s childhood with her brother and mother who served the king and queen of Ephidia, while her father was related to gramorr. After suspected treason the king raided their house and captured her parents for information, but praxina’s mother sent them away and destroyed all evidence that could have let them trace praxina and mephisto, and made praxina vow to burn the entire house with everyone in it, if neither of her parents could avoid capture.

But…….my friends said it was too cruel, to have a child burn her house down and swore vengance for life……== and to have mephisto so sidelined, and not show more of gramorr’s relation to the plot, and the king and queen were too brutal on their loyal servant(praxina’s mom) so my story shall be revised.

Some Praxina fanart and fanfiction regarding the twins’ origin story, from one of our staff in Malaysia, working on LoliRock !

It’s all very cool (even though very dark indeed… poor childs), and we’re glad our characters inspire you this much. :) I personally can’t wait to read your full story !

Inspidea’s crew LoliRock Fanart (Round 2)

Another batch of fanarts we received from our malaysian team. Truth is, they sent us tons of fanart at the beginning of the animation stage, back in 2013, so what you see here is only the tip of the iceberg.

For every drawing you got from your team, you get a little happier each time, because you know that despite the distance, these artists will put as much heart into your show as yourself. :)

All drawings above are credit with the name or pseudo of the artists who did them, with their job within the production.

Inspidea’s crew LoliRock Fanart (Round 1)

As we just finished the production of season 1, we’d like to share some fanarts from the “lolirock malaysian team” at Inspidea, our animation studio in Asia. WIthout them, LoliRock wouldn’t exist. So thanks a lot everyone ! Thanks for your work, and enduring the hardship of this production.

Iris’ First Fight scene (LoliRock Behind the Scenes - S01E01)

Here’s a new behind the scene, with Iris’ first transformation and first fight against the twins.

I remember it was a really important scene for us. When Iris sees herself for the first time in her magical dress, we all wanted her to be cute, and as react as natural as possible … or should I say, as WE would react in her position. :)

A little technical point : some shots have a purple filter on them, while most other are just plain white. Here’s the explanation : when it’s purple, it’s considered as a “Reuse”, meaning it has already been created in another episode (or at least before this one) and doesn’t not need to be animated again by the studio.

So, with no surprise, you’ll see this purple filter on the girls’s transformations scenes and on the Crystal-Luxtra spell… save for a few extra shots, specials for this episode : Instead of having the three girls cast perfectly their spell, as in the following episodes, here you’ll see Iris hesitating, observing Talia and Auriana, and having a little delay compared to them. This is subtil, we agree, but it was to show that it’s the first spell that Iris is casting, and she’s still lacking confidence in it. :)

Finally, when Iris is hesitating, hiding behind the car, you’ll see that we improved a lot this sequence in the final render compared to the animatic. Indeed, it’s rare we implement these kind of “flashback / inner thought” right at the animatic, except if it was very detailed in the script. Most of the time, we improve this right at the edit, when we have more material to do so. It’s also a way to force ourselves to be smart with the shots we reuse, and avoid creating too much new animation for a very short scene.

Oh, and yes, the storyboard artist used some Sailor Moon’s sfx in his animatic. :) And we’re fine with it.

Mephisto and Praxina introduction scene (LoliRock Behind the Scenes - S01E01)

Let’s go on from where we left Iris last time… Here’s the animatic of Mephisto and Praxina’s introduction scene. As already explained in a previous post, we wanted the twins to be really “Evil” at first apparition. You can see that the storyboard artist even gave them snake-eyes pupils on some shots, even though the character models always have “normal” pupils in the show, which make them even meaner. :)

As you’ll watch more of our Behind the scenes, you’ll probably notice that the style can change a lot from a storyboard to another. It’s normal since there are several persons behind them (often one storyboarder plus the storyboard supervisor/storyboard supervisor assistant). It’s amusing how you can guess who drew each scene just by looking at the style.

Someone once asked us if it’s a problem, that the storyboards are rough, and that the characters or backgrounds can be a lot different from the model sheets? The answer to that is mostly “no” and a little bit “yes”.

Mostly no, because we’re a team. What we ask storyboard artists to do is staging, not drawing perfectly (Although it’s always a plus when they can do it of course…). When it’s needed to redraw the character or backgrounds to match the model, that’s the design team’s job. Everyone completes each other, that’s how it works in animation.

Now, the “little bit of yes”… sometimes, when the design is far off model on storyboards, it is reeeaaally complicated for the designers to have it match to the show’s style… and it can also be confusing. This “Snake-eye” for example. How to know if it’s just a matter of a different style, or some special demand from the director for the sequence? In both cases it results in a lot of headaches, especially for the director’s assistant and the storyboard supervisor. They’re usually the ones trying to figure out the answer. That’s why communication inside the team is the key to avoiding most of problems.

We’ll show you later some examples of the designer’s works, to see the evolution from the storyboard picture to the final design. ;)
