LOLIROCK CHARACTERS
7/ GRAMORR and BANES

The Grand Wizard of Chaos, Gramorr himself, and his black panther minion Banes. With these two, the main pack is now full : we’ve got heroes, allies, and all the villains ! 

Gramorr is an evil black crystal sorcerer, who took the throne of Ephedia for himself. And if it wasn’t for the Crown’s spell that’s preventing him from leaving the castle, he probably would have covered all of Ephedia with black crystal already. 

Unable to act by himself, he has to rely on his black magic knowledge, and his lieutenants, such as Mephisto and Praxina, and his minions to do his evil deeds. While he hasn’t conquered all of Ephedia yet, everyone fears him and pray for the day he won’t be a threat anymore. 

Wherever Gramorr goes, he his followed by Banes, an evil black Panther… As for his master, Banes is a force to be reckoned with. He was thought as the “Anti-Amaru” of the show, and created to give more presence to Gramorr. 

Gramorr and Banes are the supreme evil in LoliRock’s universe. Therefore, they were really hard to design, we struggled a lot ! We’ll show you some of his developpement soon. ;)

6B/ …and PRAXINA

Still from the main pack, here’s Praxina. “Big” sister of Mephisto. Even though they’re twins, that’s how she sees herselve anyway. Evil, relentless, she’s devoted to Gramorr and hates the princesses from the bottom of her heart. Her anger is both her strenght and her weakness as it ofter blinds her. 

She hates losing and don’t hesitate to put the blame on Mephisto everytime she can. Yet, deep inside her, she may not be as heartless as she seems to be, and truly cares for her brother, despites his many failures.

6A/ MEPHISTO…

Let’s continue to reveal the main pack of the show ! Here’s Mephisto’s turn. “Little” brother of Praxina, he’s both at the same time the comic relief, the joker, and a tenacious opponent for the princesses. Most of the time following his sister’s orders, yet he can shine too and have genius ideas, though he doesn’t always realise it. Definitely evil, Definitely awesome. It’s not surprising he’s the favourite character of many people among the team !

LoliRock’s Main Pack - Props

Designs by Hélène Pierre, color by Flore Pipari.

… because princesses always need the proper accessories to fight evil, here is the “Props Main Pack”, with Magical transformation device and weapon for each princesses, also daily item such as their main musical instrument, cell phone, and things like that. It helps a lot to define the taste of each character. 

“Props” is the name used for items that are moving, and not part of a background, and as such, are technically created the same way as characters. Remember when you noticed this door or chest wasn’t exactly like the rest of the background, in an old animation movie or a video game ? Well, it’s a props.  

Fun fact : Talia wasn’t supposed to have a cellphone at all (she dislikes them), yet we had to create one for story issues (see “Talia & Kyle”). Talia also has more than just her Keytar : a classic guitar was designed for her afterwards. Also, “why old cellphones, and not modern smartphones ?” Well, let’s say they’re vintage. ;)

And finally, the Crown of Ephedia and the Oracle Gem, ultimate goal for the princesses ! This crown was so difficult to design… In fact, it is so complex to draw that we use a CGI model in the show, both for the crown and the gems, yet here’s the 2D model reference.

Doug, Aunt Ellen and Missy’s expressions

Even though they didn’t make it to the main pack (because they’re mostly rough), I thought you’d like to see posings and expressions for Aunt Ellen, Doug and Missy. (from our old “Presentation pack”, we used to introduce the show to new people)

These are the researches that we liked the most, and were used as reference to finalise these characters. That’s why they’re more rough than previous designs from the main pack, and it’s kind of normal : cleaning a drawing takes time, and we don’t do it all the times, even less so for secondary characters.

5/ Iris’ entourage

Nathaniel is Iris’ hidden lover. He works as a waiter at a Smoothie Bar where the 3 girls like to chill. Doug is Nathaniel’s best friend and a videoblog-nerd lolirock fan. Missy is in love with Nathaniel too and therfore arises as Iris’ rival.
Aunt Ellen is Iris’ only parental figure since she doesn’t know her real parents until…

Again, as you can see we draw a new “hands sheet” for the boys in the show. :)

4/ AMARU

Amaru is a little creature from Ephedia. Besides being an adorable fur ball, he’s mostly on Earth as a strong defender of the princesses. With a first magic trick, Amaru can open a parallel dimension for the princesses to fight the villains without risking harm innocent people. With another trick, the pet-shaped Amaru can transform into a huge Pegasus-like creature. Helps the princesses several times !

New main pack model sheets, gor Amaru this time. And as you can see, we had to create a “hand sheet” especially for him. :)

LoliRock Characters Construction Model sheets and the “Do & Don’t” sheets (Part 1)

On previous post (from Bertrand), you could see a fraction of the main pack, with turns, expressions and posing.These are the basic everyone needs in order to draw the character in the style of the show. However, on LoliRock, Bertrand went further.

We all knew our characters were very difficult to draw. Even very skilled designers such as Bertrand, Benedicte and Galou had trouble with them, during the whole production. So Bertrand created the construction model sheets above, in order to help everybody : the construction sheets are giving rules, while the “Do & Don’t” sheets help to avoid the most current mistakes… and as you can see, it’s easy to do most of them. 

I’ll be honest, we don’t do this on every production, especially in France where budget are very limited. There is, most of the time, some “Do & Don’t”, but they’re created by the director or animation supervisor, and just before / while doing the animation. Now, putting it in right the main pack, and this much ? Well, some might consider that “overkill”, yet I’m sure most of our designers and animators would disagree and were glad to have all these details right from the start. It helped them to avoid many “off model” retakes, so it was definitely worth it.  (Edit : after reading this post, I had a message from Julien Maret, one of our animation supervisor, who confirms he uses these sheets every day. ^_^)

Iris’s construction sheets were the first one Bertrand created, because you know, she’s the main character and we weren’t sure we’d have the time to create these sheets for other characters. Then, we did, and then he repeated his process for Talia, Auriana… and other to come very soon ! ;)

Folks, I can’t hide I love drawing girls so much, creating fashion, shoes, folds… and Oh Boy, the LoliRock project was so full of that !
But when you draw an interesting character, there always has to be a challenge (you often don’t even realize you’ll be in trouble in the first place), something you’ll have to work on very hard, to improve yourself and be proud. and there was THE biggest challenge EVERRRR : HAIRS ! Damn long curly hairs ! And believe me, we drew so much sheets full of hair turnarounds and construction for the animation…
But, even with all that, you can’t forget HANDS (and feet). it’s the basis ! that’s for me the ultimate detail that gives a unique signature to your character design.
Get a look on Basketeers’ hands. Same designer, same posings, but hands are the body’s details that give the biggest difference of STYLE.

Also part of the main pack, but more from a technical aspect. Hands are very importants. Like Bertrand says, it’s one of the basis.

Now, see this “hand sheet” ? It’s not just “Iris hands”. It is supposed to work with all girls in the show (except some special cases, if the global shape of characters is too different)

Hi guys, here’s Iris’ model sheet in what we call “the Main Pack”. 

It’s like a very detailed version of the graphic bible of the show, created with one main purpose : teach everyone else how the show is supposed to be drawn, and colored. 

Here are the very exact model sheets we sent to our animators. There are turn around, expressions, posings, close up of the face, line and color, etc. You can notice every model sheet has a specific code name too. Here’s Iris in her main casual and magical outfits. More to come soon ! ;)
